Resistance Nest Dohlenturm

631b Anti Tank Bunker

This large bunker formed part of a small resistance nest defending the western end of L’Ancresse Bay. The covered rear entrance staircase is a unique design to Guernsey, and was most likely due to the depth that the casemate was built in relation to the original ground levels. Consisting of a room to house the gun, and adjacent ammunition room. This design had the spent shell pit below the gun room, accessed via a hatch at the rear of the room.

The bunker also contained a crew room with bunks, stove and telephone. Separated ventilation room to take care of the gun room, and rear lobby, gas lock and entrance defence.

The gun was a captured Czech 4cm kanón vz. 36, redesignated the 4.7cm Pak 36 (t) by the Germans. A very capable weapon taken from the Czech fortifications in large numbers and installed into special designed bunkers. The Germans added a 100mm thick armoured shield on the outside that could be raised and lowered via a winch system from inside the bunker.
