676 Anti Tank Bunker

This small bunker formed part of a small resistance nest defending the centre of Bellegreve Bay. Consisting of a single room to house the gun, and rear entrance lobby.

The gun was a captured Czech 4cm kanón vz. 36, redesignated the 4.7cm Pak 36 (t) by the Germans. A very capable weapon taken from the Czech fortifications in large numbers and installed into special designed bunkers. The Germans added a 100mm thick armoured shield on the outside that could be raised and lowered via a winch system from inside the bunker.

When Festung Guernsey opened this bunker in 2011 it had been buried since the 1970’s. Despite being open for many years after the war, the bunker was remarkably well preserved with many if its original features still in situ. The ventilation pump, fortress telephone and winch for the armoured shield along with a number of artefacts found in the spent shell pit, outside the embrasure.
